The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has ruled that the arrest of Ukraine's former Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko violated his human rights.
The European Court of Human Rights delivered this judgment at a public hearing in Strasbourg on Tuesday, after considering the opposition politician's appeal against his arrest.
The court also obliged Ukraine to pay Lutsenko EUR 15,000 in compensation for moral damage.
The court found seven violations of articles of the European Convention on Human Rights on account of Lutsenko's arrest and ensuing detention: two violations of paragraph 1 Article 5 (right to liberty and security), a violation of paragraph 2 Article 5 (the right to be informed of the reasons for one's arrest); two violations of paragraph 3 of Article 5 (right to be brought promptly before a judge), a violation of paragraph 4 of Article 5 (right to challenge the lawfulness of one's detention); and a violation of Article 18 (limitation on use of restrictions on rights).
Lutsenko was arrested on December 26, 2010. He has been held at a Kyiv pre-trial detention center since.
