MEP Harms promises probe into cases of corruption during Ukraine's preparations for Euro 2012
Co-Chair of the Group of the Greens/European Free Alliance in the European Parliament Rebecca Harms (Germany) has promised that an investigation will be conducted in Ukraine after Euro 2012 regarding cases of corruption during the country's preparations for the European football championship.
"After the Euros, we will pay attention to corruption, how it was possible to build big stadiums in such a short time, for what money, why it was done without tenders, and to whose private pockets money came," she said at a press conference in Kyiv on Friday.
"A large-scale investigation like this will be conducted after Euro 2012," she added.
As reported, MEPs Werner Schulz and Rebecca Harms arrived in Ukraine on June 13 to attend the Netherlands-Germany match in Kharkiv and meet with Ukraine's jailed former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko. The aircraft in which the MEPs left Germany for Ukraine flew into a thunderstorm, and the meeting with Tymoshenko was moved from the evening of June 13 to the morning of June 14.
Before the match, Harms and Schulz unrolled posters reading "Fair play in football and politics" and "Release all political prisoners."
