Cox-Kwasniewski mission has to bring specific results, says Fule

European Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Stefan Fule has said that the European Parliament's observation mission of Pat Cox and Aleksander Kwasniewski should result in a specific evaluation, with further specific actions aimed at settling the identified problems.

The EU Commissioner said this at a meeting of the EU-Ukraine Parliamentary Cooperation Committee in Strasbourg.

"This is not just a mission to receive more information, this is a mission, and I really hope for this, which will give specific evaluation, which will be followed by specific actions aimed at the settlement of many of these problems," he said.

According to Fule, this initiative of President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz "should be welcomed."

"Without a doubt, the European Commission will support this process. I think it's important for these politicians to have an opportunity not just to monitor the court proceedings against one person [former Ukrainian Premier Yulia Tymoshenko], they also have to be able to extend their mandate to other cases and exceed the limits of legal aspects, but also look at these processes in the general context," Fule said.

Fule added that the EP observers should submit their conclusions "within timeframes that will coincide with the upcoming parliamentary elections."

As reported, the mission of the European Parliament's observers has been extended. The EP representatives will also observe the trials of the criminal cases against former Ukrainian Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko and former Ukrainian Acting Defence Minister Valeriy Ivaschenko, as well as the preparations for the upcoming parliamentary elections in Ukraine.
