Ukraine this year could harvest 19.1 million tonnes of wheat, or 13.7% more than last year, the Agrarian Policy and Food Ministry of Ukraine has said.
However, according to the agriculture minister, the total barley yield is expected to be 8.2 million tonnes, which is 3.2% down on last year.
The ministry noted that the harvest of both wheat and barley would exceed the country's demand for these crops, which is estimated at 11.2 million tonnes and 6.2 million tonnes per year respectively.
The ministry forecast that Ukraine in 2011 would harvest nearly 300,000 tonnes of buckwheat, which is 160,000 tonnes up on 2010, with domestic demand being 160,000-170,000 tonnes per year.
