The State Railway Administration of Ukraine, Ukrzaliznytsia, plans to resume piggyback transportation by rail.
According to a press service of the administration, the decision was made on January 20 at a meeting at Ukraine's Transport and Communications Ministry, after which a special working group of representatives of the Transport and Communications Ministry, Ukrzaliznytsia and other interested bodies was created to urgently consider and settle issues of the resumption and permanent operations of piggyback trains.
According to the release, the decision was made for reasons of ecology, cutting the breakdown rate on roads, easier frontier crossing and expansion of service provided by rail transport to consigners of cargo.
Ukrzaliznytsia said that the administration has drawn up rules for piggyback transportation and submitted proposed to resume piggyback transportation to railway administrations in Romania, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Austria and Russia.
The administration said that decisions on the transport policy at the state level should be made to organize piggyback transportation, in particular, a draft bill on piggyback transportation should be drawn up and approved and customs procedures for crossing the border should be relaxed and accelerated.
