Situation on Ukraine's stock market has stabilized, securities commission says

The economic crisis had led to a significant decrease in the number of operations on the stock market and the volume of issues of corporate bonds, but recently the situation on the stock market has stabilized, Mykola Burmaka, a member of the State Commission on Securities and the Stock Market, has said.

"The trends show that the situation has stabilized. We are expecting the traditional growth of activity in the second half of [the year]," he said at a briefing in Kyiv.

Burmaka said that in the fourth quarter of 2008 the outflow of nonresident funds from the stock market was UAH 5.3 billion, and in the first quarter of 2009 the balance was equal to zero.

He said that in the third quarter of 2008 the inflow of investment was UAH 10.4 billion, while in the second quarter the indicator was UAH 7.2 billion.

According to the commission, the volume of stock trading in the first half of 2009 fell by 46.4%, to UAH 9.61 billion, while the number of operations on transferring ownership rights through registrars dropped by 52%, to 168,490, and through custodians by 34%, to 162,100.
