Level of wage debts in Ukraine falling, says labor minister

The wage debt in Ukraine as of May 1, 2009 fell by 18.5% compared to early April, Labor and Social Policy Minister Liudmyla Denisova at a briefing in Kyiv on Wednesday.

"According to the State Statistics Committee, the total wage debt in the state as of May 1, 2009 was UAH 1.405 billion. If we compare the data with that as of April 1, this is 18.5% less. We can say about the total fall in the level of wage debts," the minister said.

Denisova said that in particular, the wage debt in industry fell by 25%, in the transport and communications sector – by 24%, in the agriculture – by 6% and in construction – by 4%.

The minister also said that there is a trend of the fall in the wage debt at non-economically-active companies – by 4% on average. She said that the wage debt in the sector as of early May came to UAH 74 million. Denisova said that the wage debt at the non-economically-active companies of the industrial sector fell by 7%, in the agriculture, trade and construction sectors – by 2% on average.
