The provision of information on the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in products does not cut risks to the health of citizens and does not cut the impact of GMOs on Ukrainian bio-diversity, first deputy chairman of All-Ukraine Environment League, Tetiana Tymochko, has told Interfax-Ukraine.
"From July 1, Ukrainians will be able to realize their constitutional right to information on GMO-containing products. This is a big achievement for the country. As for cutting risks to the health of citizens and problems with Ukraine's bio-diversity, there is a good deal of work still to be done," the expert said.
Tymchenko said that there are a number of documents in Ukraine regulating the use of GMOs, although they contain many flaws.
She said that according to a cabinet resolution on the procedure for the state registration of GMOs, information on the purpose, form and method of use of these products can be submitted in any form by importers.
"We see this as a loophole for bringing GMOs into the country that are harmful both to people and the environment," the expert said.
