Specialists from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on May 25 started working at Yuzhnoukrainsk nuclear power plant (NPP) during which they will check the correspondence of the second reactor's safety levels to international standards, according to the press service of National JSC Energoatom.
According to the press service, the mission, which is to work for a week, includes experts representing the IAEA, the European Commission and nuclear power enterprises and establishments of the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary.
Four of the six experts participated in a similar mission at the first reactor at Yuzhnoukrainsk NPP in February 2009.
"The mission that was estimating the safety of the first reactor project was deemed successful. We expect a similar result for the second," a statement reads citing John Preston, the head of the IAEA mission.
The international mission at Yuzhnoukrainsk NPP is being carried out under a memorandum of understanding on co-operation in the field of energy between the European Union and Ukraine.
According to Energoatom's press service, from May 25 until June 4 a mission from OSART (Operational Safety Review Team) will work at Khmelnytsky NPP to review the realization of recommendations given by an IAEA mission during checks in November 2007.
