Ukraine cut its power consumption in February 2013 by 15.6% or by 2.875 billion kilowatt-hours year-over-year, to 15.58 billion kilowatt-hours, the press service of the Ukrenergo national energy company has reported.
"Taking into account the fact that 2012 was a leap year, the reduction in consumption in February 2013 to February 2012 was 12.6%," reads the report.
The reduction was linked to an increase in temperatures compared to the previous year.
"The average temperature in February 2013 was +0.1 Centigrade, and in February 2012 it was -9.6 Centigrade," Ukrenergo said.
The average consumption in peak hours was 25.42 gigawatts, which is 11.8% or 3.403 gigawatts less year-over-year.
Ukrenergo operates Ukraine's backbone and interstate power grids, as well as supervising the country's national grid. It is a state-owned company and is controlled by the Ukrainian Energy and Coal Industry Ministry.
