National Joint Stock Company Naftogaz Ukrainy and Open Joint Stock Company Gazprom have agreed to start talks on redeeming Ukraine's debts for imported Russian gas, Naftogaz Ukrainy Chairman Oleh Dubyna said at a briefing on Wednesday.
"We've agreed that by December 1 we will repay all our debts, and from December 1 meet with Gazprom and discuss how to emerge from this situation," Dubyna said.
He said that during talks with Gazprom Chairman Alexey Miller on Tuesday he had discussed the current situation.
According to Dubyna, the debts run up by Ukraine are linked to the decline in gas consumption.
He said that at the beginning of 2008, Naftogaz Ukrainy agreed with Gazprom on volumes of imported gas and the plans for pumping it into storage facilities, adding that Ukraine has met all of its obligations.
