Kazakh national company KazMunayGas (KMG) plans to use tank farms for oil storage in case of transportation disruptions, KMG head Askat Khassenov said.
"If there are any difficulties [with oil transportation], our task is to ensure flexibility," Khassenov said during a meeting of the public council of the Samruk-Kazyna fund in Astana on Friday.
Flexibility includes, among other things, the possibility of using the existing tank farms in the country, he said.
"For example, the tank farm of KazTransOil has 1.4 million cubic meters, and we are expanding this farm. Second, the use of refineries' own tanks, for 250,000 tonnes. There is capacity at production facilities, with about 215,000 tonnes there," he said.
Khassenov also said that the issue of creating oil storage tanks, currently being discussed by the public, had also been discussed with international partners, and was an expensive project.
"It's very expensive. Our understanding is not only to create tanks, but to make the system flexible," he said.
