Most roads in Ukraine, apart from national and international ones, will be transferred to the balance sheets of local administrations in 2013, the press service of the Infrastructure Ministry has reported.
The press service said that Vice Premier and Infrastructure Minister Borys Kolesnikov said this at the InnoTrans 2012 exhibition in Berlin.
"Around one third of 170,00 kilometers of roads will be under the management of the Infrastructure Ministry, and the rest of the roads will be given over to the management of the local authorities," he said.
He said that this would promote an increase in road quality, as their construction will be financed more rationally. In addition, the management system will be totally reformed.
"It is required that each settlement have a high-quality road – this will be a task of local administrations, while we bring in order national highways very quickly," Kolesnikov said.
Earlier, he said that he plans to raise the issue of giving benefits to companies which build roads.
"We should introduce benefits for road constructors, similar to the benefits in the hotel business. I mean, we could lift income tax for ten years for them, so that they could have an absolutely transparent economy, and buy the latest equipment and the most up-to-date equipment at their own expense," he said.
