Mykolaiv region diversifies all heating systems, generates 4 GW of energy while consuming 300 MW – Kim

Most residents of Mykolaiv region do not use gas for heating, while the heating systems themselves have been diversified, thanks to which the region is quite well protected for the next heating season, Head of Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration Vitaliy Kim has said.

"In our region, 58% do not use gas for heating, and centralized heating exists only in the city of Mykolaiv and Pivdennoukrainsk. But there is a nuclear power plant there, the town is small, with a population of 40,000, so there will be no problem there. The thermal power plant we have was backed up by installing an extensive network of modular boiler houses. In general, this story started a long time ago: more than 90 boiler houses have been built in the region, and last year the state financed another 18 large ones," Kim said in an exclusive interview with Interfax-Ukraine.

"It is not that we are very smart – we were forced to diversify all systems. When the thermal power plant was hit and 100,000 people were left without heating for two days, everyone immediately understood that something had to be done, and it was done last year. Therefore, I am more or less calm about the heating season because we started two years earlier. Accordingly, we will be better protected, let’s say, next season," he added.

According to the head of the regional administration, the region has 3,400 generators with a capacity of 1 to 1.5 MW, including in reserve.

He also said that DTEK, already during the full-scale war, built wind farms in the region with a total capacity of 189 MW, and is completing additional ones, bringing their total capacity to 500 MW.

"Overall, we generate 4 GW of capacity, three of them from the nuclear power plant, plus solar and wind energy. And we use about 300 MW, that is, we give Ukraine ten times more than we consume," Kim said.
