According to the main provisions approved on Wednesday, Germany will continue to provide support to Ukraine in the amount of EUR 11.6 billion in 2027 and EUR 8.5 billion annually in the period from 2028 to 2030, Reuters reports.
When asked about the reduction in aid to Ukraine starting from 2028, German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil pointed to the EUR 90 billion EU loan for Ukraine, which has now been approved by EU members.
Speaking at a press conference, Klingbeil added that the figures specified in the financial program may change in the future depending on Ukraine’s needs.
On Wednesday, the German government approved the main budget indicators for 2027, including total borrowing of EUR 196.5 billion, aiming to increase spending on neglected infrastructure and defense.
The draft budget for 2027, which is part of a medium-term financial program through 2029, provides for total expenditures of EUR 543.3 billion, which is 3.6% more than the previous year.
"The events of the last year, particularly in Iran over recent months, show how important investments in our defense capability are," Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz told reporters.
Taking into account the special fund for defense needs and funds allocated for Ukraine, total defense spending in 2027 is expected to reach EUR 144.9 billion.
New borrowing within the main budget is expected to rise to EUR 110.8 billion, with an additional EUR 58.2 billion to be raised through the infrastructure fund and EUR 27.5 billion through the special defense fund approved by former Chancellor Olaf Scholz after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
