Electricity deficit in Ukraine decreases from 5-6 GW to 4.3-4.5 GW due to warming – Minister of Energy
The electricity deficit in recent days is 4.3-4.5 GW, which is significantly less than it was on frosty days, when it reached 5-6 GW with peak consumption of 18 GW, said First Deputy Prime Minister, Minoster of Energy Denys Shmyhal.
"As of today, February 12, the forecast peak consumption is 16.4 GW — this is what the economy would like to consume. Unfortunately, we can only provide 12.3 GW," Shmyhal said at a meeting of the Verkhovna Rada's energy committee Thursday.
"Of this capacity, almost 2 GW is imports, 7.5 GW is nuclear power plants, very few thermal power plant units — only five power units with a total capacity of 854 MW. Today there is slightly less sun, but we already had 1.6-1.7 GW yesterday and the day before — meaning the sun is starting to gain capacity. We also hope there will be a good water spring, and Ukrhydroenergo will give us a positive inflow," the energy minister noted.
He added that all nine nuclear power plant units (total capacity 7.8 GW) were operating in the morning, mostly at nominal capacity, but, according to him, there is still reserve capacity at Rivne nuclear power plant.
As reported, after Russia's strike on the energy sector on February 7, nuclear power plants were forced to reduce capacity.
