Lomachenko retains junior lightweight title after Rigondeaux quits

Ukrainian boxer Vasyl Lomachenko (10-1, 8 KOs) retained his WBO junior lightweight title in a fight against Cuban Guillermo Rigondeaux (17-1, 11 KOs) at Madison Square Garden in New York on Saturday night.

Rigondeaux quit after the sixth round, claiming a hand injury. This was the first professional title fight ever between two-time Olympic gold medalists.

This was the fourth consecutive fight for Lomachenko in which his opponent has retired.

Rigondeaux won bantamweight gold medals at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney and the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. Lomachenko won a featherweight gold medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing and a lightweight gold medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

In July 2013, Lomachenko signed a promotional contract with Top Rank, which he extended in May 2015 for five years.
