Ukrainian team wins first gold medal at Invictus Games

The Ukrainian team on Monday won its first gold medal at the Invictus Games in Canada.

"Our first gold! Oleh Zimnikov won the 1,500 meter race. Before the games, Oleh said he was sure than Ukraine would do well at the games. He was right :-) I hope that [the success] continues," the Ukrainian team posted to its Facebook account.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko congratulated Zimnikov with his victory.

"The first gold medal of our Invictus Games squad. Congratulations to Oleh Zimnikov for his 1,500 meter win. Keep it up," Poroshenko said on his Facebook page.

The Invictus Games are an international sporting competition held Paralympic-style founded by Prince Harry of Wales in 2014. Military servicemen and servicewomen with limited physical abilities due to their service take part.

Ukraine in 2017 for the first time received the right to participate the Invictus Games as a participant of numerous military training exercises, United Nations peacekeeping operations and as a country whose soldiers took part in military operations during the Anti-Terrorist Operation in eastern Ukraine. This year is also the debut for the Romanian squad.

Some 15 Ukrainian sportsmen and women are competing in sporting events, including archery, driving competition, golf, indoor rowing, track and field and Paralympic swimming.
