Russia cannot nominate athletes to Rio Olympics unless they meet specific criteria

The Lausanne-based Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has barred the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) from nominating athletes to the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro unless they meet some specific criteria, CAS Secretary General Matthieu Reeb said on Thursday.

Since the International Olympic Committee (IOC) was not a party in the arbitrations (the appeal by the ROC and 68 individual Russian track-and-field athletes against the International Association of Athletics Federations' decision to make them ineligible for competitions under its aegis), the CAS found that it had no jurisdiction to determine whether the IOC is entitled generally to accept or refuse the nomination by ROC of Russian track and field athletes to compete at the Rio Olympics, Reeb said in a statement shown by the Rossiya-24 (VGTRK) television channel on Thursday.
