Court sets June 1, 2018 deadline for Rozenblat, Polyakov to review charges in amber smuggling case

Kyiv's Solomiansky Distruct Court has set a June 1, 2018 deadline for Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine deputies Boryslav Rozenblat and Maksym Poliakov to review case materials in the so-called criminal "Amber case" against them.

"The judges limited the period to June 1. It's doesn't matter if we have time to review all the materials or not," Poliakov's defense lawyer Petro Boiko told the Kyiv-based Ukrainska Pravda e-zine.

As reported, in June 2017, Director of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine Artem Sytnyk reported a scheme of illegal amber mining, in which MP Rozenblat and MP Maksym Poliakov of the People's Front faction were involved. The amount of received bribes exceeded UAH 300,000.

On June 21, Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko requested the parliament should give its consent to prosecution, detention and arrest of these two parliamentarians.

On July 12, 2017, the Verkhovna Rada conceded to prosecution of Poliakov and Rozenblat, but voted against their detention and arrest.

The Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office requested UAH 10 million bail as a preventive measure for Rozenblat.

On July 18, 2017 Kyiv's Solomiansky District Court chose a pretrial restriction for Rozenblat in the form of a UAH 7 million bail and an obligation to wear an electronic tracking bracelet, not to leave Kyiv and Zhytomyr without notice and to hand over all his foreign passports.

The defendants and their lawyers have had access to case materials since February 15, 2018.
