Poltorak notes importance of creating powerful Armed Forces along with introducing peacekeepers in Donbas

Ukrainian Defense Minister Stepan Poltorak has noted the need to create powerful Armed Forces in the country along with the introduction of a peacekeeping mission in Donbas.

"Stepan Poltorak stressed once again that the introduction of peacekeeping forces will contribute to the resolution of this conflict [in Donbas] by peaceful means, but at the same time expressed conviction that simultaneously it is necessary to work very fruitfully on reforming and creating the powerful Armed Forces of Ukraine, which would not allow the seizure of the territory, would be ready to protect and restore the territorial integrity of Ukraine," the ministry's press service stated.

The minister also noted that the procedure of keeping peace in Donbas by peacekeeping units must meet all the requirements of international norms and laws.

He also noted the importance of United States assistance. He stressed that during the talks with U.S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis in Washington the parties discussed the issues related not only to the provision of lethal weapons but also the prospects for military-technical cooperation, the possibility of expanding cooperation between the defense agencies of the United States and Ukraine.
