Poroshenko and Mattis in Munich discuss further steps to strengthen Ukraine's defense capacity

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and U.S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis at a meeting in Munich have discussed the situation in Donbas and the need to introduce a peacekeeping mission, sanctions against the Russian Federation, as well as further steps to strengthen Ukraine's defense capability.

"The parties discussed the situation in Donbas and expressed concern over the ongoing attempts of Russia and militants it supports to undermine the peace process ... discussed further steps to strengthen Ukraine's defense stability, and also noted the priority of development of strategic partnership between Kyiv and Washington," the presidential press service said.

Poroshenko and Mattis also considered the necessity of placing the UN peacekeeping mission in Donbas in accordance with the UN principles and the objectives of the Minsk process.

The sides stressed the importance of the policy of sanctions against the Russian Federation until Ukraine's territorial integrity and sovereignty is restored.

Poroshenko expressed gratitude for the important decisions of Washington in the issue of strengthening the capabilities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the country's defense capacity, noting that the latest decisions made by Washington are a signal to the aggressor against any intentions to escalate the situation in Donbas.
