Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine (NSDC) Oleksandr Turchynov, who served as acting Ukrainian president from February 23 to June 7, 2014, has said he wanted to persuade former President Viktor Yanukovych to return to Kyiv in February 2014 and tender his resignation.

During the testimony in court in the Yanukovych treason case on Thursday, he said that when it became known that Yanukovych and someone from his entourage stayed on the territory of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, it was decided to send representatives from Kyiv to offer ex-the president to return and write a letter of resignation.

"I was convinced that I could convince Yanukovych, based on the current situation, to write a letter of resignation, which would greatly simplify the situation in Ukraine," Turchynov said.

He noted that Arsen Avakov and Valentyn Nalyvaichenko, then people's deputies and authorized representatives of the Verkhovna Rada on control over the activities of the Interior Ministry and the Security Service of Ukraine, could not find Yanukovych and received information that he was hiding at a Russian Navy base.
