Naryshkin told me over phone after Yanukovych fled that Russia would find political grounds to deploy military – Turchynov

Ex-head of Russia's Duma Sergey Naryshkin in a telephone call with then ex-acting Ukrainian President Oleksandr Turchynov after disgraced ex-Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych fled to Russia threatened to destroy Ukraine's new leaders and hinted about a letter written by Yanukovych requesting Russia deploy military forces to Ukraine.

"During a meeting of the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) I was told that Naryshkin would call. I spoke with Naryshkin, who said Russia only recognized me as the legitimate head of Ukraine's parliament and not as acting Ukrainian president. They said they believed that we seized power illegally," Turchynov said on Tuesday at the state treason trial of Yanukovych at Kyiv's Obolonsky District court.

Naryshkin said Russia considered Yanukovych to be the legitimate Ukrainian president and was willing to receive any information from him about Ukraine.

"At the same time Naryshkin began to make threats to destroy Ukrainian officials if Russian-language speakers, Russian citizens and Russian soldiers were killed. He said Russia could destroy new Ukrainian leaders. In essence, he was threatening to invade," Turchynov said, adding Russia had no legal arguments to invade Ukraine whatsoever.
