Oleksandr Yanukovych to sue ex-Duma deputy Ponomarev

Lawyers of Ukrainian ex-president Viktor Yanukovych's son Oleksandr said a former member of the Russian Duma, Ilya Ponomarev, who is a witness in the ex-president against, gave false testimony to the Obolonsky district court in Kyiv regarding Oleksandr, whose lawyers are now going to sue Ponomarev.

"On February 14, 2018, during questioning at Obolonsky District Court in Kyiv, former Russian Duma deputy Ponomarev gave false testimony under oath. In particular, Ponomarev was clearly lying when he claimed that in 2013 Oleksandr Yanukovych was in talks with Russian Federation leadership over the sale of Ukrainian external bonds and after that ostensibly received $1 billion as a bribe in exchange for the Ukrainian president Yanukovych's refusal to sign an association agreement with the EU," Yanukovych Jr.'s representative Yuri Kirasir wrote on Facebook.

Ponomarev may have given this testimony "at the behest of the Ukrainian Prosecutor General's Office as a 'payment' for being allowed to stay and enjoy government protection while doing business in Ukraine," Kirasir said.

"To prove the falseness of Ponomarev's witness statements and have him prosecuted for knowingly making false statements, very soon the lawyers for Oleksandr Yanukovych will initiate a lawsuit for the protection of honor and dignity, and file a statement about the commission of a criminal offense," Kirasir said.
