ECHR assigns EUR 2,000 in compensation to Ukrainian Afanasyev, who was held in Russia

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) at a meeting on Thursday, February 8, decided to recover EUR 2,000 from Russia in favor of Ukrainian citizen Hennadiy Afanasyev with two judgments for EUR 1,000 each under two applications on inhumane conditions of his transportation in the prison vehicles of the Russian Federal Penitentiary Service.

"The ECHR has fully confirmed the truthfulness of my words and testimony regarding my fate and conditions in the Kremlin's prison and in general the events that took place for 767 days of my imprisonment. This decision is a strong trump card and an argument in my hands for the future that I will use against all those who try to justify Russian aggression," Afanasyev wrote on his Facebook page on Thursday, February 8.

At the same time, he noted that "the miserable 2,000 euros for humiliation that I experienced testifies only to the fact that the court bowed to the wishes of the Russian government."

"The ECHR has itself violated the Convention. It had to invite Ukraine to speak out on the essence of my complaints, because I am a citizen of Ukraine. This did not happen," Afanasyev said.

On June 14, 2016, Crimean citizens convicted in Russia, Ukrainians Afanasyev and Yuriy Soloshenko, were returned to Ukraine as part of their exchange for Odesa journalists Elena Glischinskaya and Vitaly Didenko. Immediately upon arrival, they were taken to the Scientific and Practical Center for Preventive and Clinical Medicine of the State Affairs Department (Kyiv).
