Rada speaker hopes NBU governor to be appointed by late Feb

Parliament in February could resolve the issue of appointing the governor of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU), Verkhovna Rada Speaker Andriy Parubiy has said.

"We have the nomination, but we need the decision of the committee. I also plan, and it would be right, that the candidate who is proposed to the post of the NBU head meets all parliamentary factions," Parubiy said at a joint briefing with Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman on Monday.

He said that the meeting of the committee on the issue will be held this week. The draft resolution would be discussed in the Verkhovna Rada' session hall after discussion in parliamentary factions.

"I plan this month, if not this plenary week, then next plenary week. I plan not to delay with the issue and urgently put it on the agenda of the Verkhovna Rada," he said.

As reported, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko submitted draft decrees to the Verkhovna Rada on the dismissal of Valeriya Gontareva from the post of head of the National Bank of Ukraine and the appointment of Yakiv Smoliy to this post on January 18.

Gontareva in April 2017 reported on the decision to resign and on May 11 appointed her first deputy Smoliy acting head of the central bank. Until now Gontareva remains on vacation and does not intend to return to work at the NBU.

Under the constitution, the NBU governor is appointed by the parliament at the president's proposal for a seven-year term.
