Ukraine will submit memo within Convention on Law of Sea on Feb 19 - Zerkal

Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine for European Integration Olena Zerkal has stated Ukraine intends on February 19 to file a memorandum within the claim to the United Nations International Law Commission (Hamburg, Germany) regarding Russia's violating the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

"On February 19 we submit our memorandum, in which we accuse Russia of usurping our rights, Ukraine's rights as a coastal sea state, where we indicate all the violations connected with the Black Sea, the Sea of Azov, the Kerch Strait, the construction of the Kerch bridge," she said at a press conference on the results of work of the Ukrainian diplomacy in 2017 and priorities for 2018.

The deputy minister noted that after Ukraine submits the memorandum, Russia will have three months to file objections regarding the jurisdiction of the tribunal to consider this issue.

"Obviously, they will file these objections, because they believe that Crimea is the territory of the Russian Federation recognized by no one," she added.

Zerkal stressed Ukraine is preparing the second memorandum on the case, in which justifies why it is a coastal state.
