Lawyers want to interrogate former top officials in Yanukovych treason case

Former President Viktor Yanukovych's lawyers want to interrogate in the Obolonsky District Court of Kyiv as witnesses in the case on the ex-president's high treason former Prime Minister Mykola Azarov, former Head of the Presidential Administration and former NSDC Secretary Andriy Kliuyev, former Interior Minister Vitaliy Zakharchenko and other persons who held government office before the winter of 2014.

Interfax-Ukraine learned that the list of 35 witnesses from the defense team, which was submitted to the court, also includes former Chief of the Security Service of Ukraine Oleksandr Yakymenko, former Commander of the Interior Troops of the Interior Ministry Stanislav Shuliak, former Defense Minister Pavlo Lebedev, former Commander of the Ukrainian Navy and former Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Yuriy Illin, and former head of the SBU office in Kyiv and Kyiv region Oleksandr Scheholev.

In addition, Yanukovych's lawyers want to interrogate former head of the security service of the Ukrainian president, Kostiantyn Kobzar, former security guard of the president, Serhiy Bernatsky, and employees of the Ukraerorukh state enterprise.

The list of witnesses from the defense team also includes several persons who are designated as "Crimean residents" and former employees of the main directorate of the Ukrainian Income and Tax Ministry in Crimea.

The ex-president's lawyers also want to question again the former permanent representative of Ukraine in the UN, Yuriy Serheyev.

Lawyer Vitaliy Serdiuk said that the court has no grounds for refusing to ensure interrogation of these witnesses.

However, this list of witnesses is not yet final.
