Ukrainian, Portuguese presidents discuss deployment of UN peacekeepers in Donbas

Ukrainian and Portuguese Presidents Petro Poroshenko and Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa have discussed the deployment of a full-scale UN peacekeeping force to the occupied part of Donbas.

"We discussed with Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa the prospects for deploying a full-fledged UN peacekeeping mission in Donbas, which should become an important de-escalation tool and will contribute to bringing peace to Ukrainian soil," Poroshenko wrote on Twitter on Monday.

According to the press service of the Ukrainian president, Poroshenko noted the importance of cooperation between the two states as part of international organizations, including the UN.

"I wanted to express the hope that our effective cooperation will help make a decision on the deployment of a classic peacekeeping mission of the United Nations Security Council, whose mandate will be extended to the entire occupied territory," Poroshenko told journalists in Lisbon on Monday following the talks with his Portuguese counterpart.

"We will have effective means to bring peace to Ukrainian land, and peacekeepers will have access to the uncontrolled section of the Ukrainian-Russian border," Poroshenko said.

He also thanked his colleague for deepening cooperation between the two countries in the field of defense and security, in the military-technical sphere and expressed hope for their further development.
