Klimkin, Ukrainian Ambassador to Serbia discuss Serbian fighters in Donbas

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin and Ukrainian Ambassador to Serbia Oleksandr Aleksandrovych during the consultations on Tuesday discussed the relations with Serbia, paying special attention to the issue of Serbian mercenaries who are fighting in the Donbas.

"Apart from discussing the issues of Ukrainian-Serbian relations, the key focus of the consultations was the issue of Serbian mercenaries fighting in the Donbas for Russian occupation forces and the need for Serbia to comply with its international legal obligations in the field of combating terrorism," the press service said.

The interlocutors are also concerned about illegal contacts between the representatives of Serbia and Russia-occupied Crimea.

The minister and ambassador expressed hope that the Serbian side will fully respect the principle of respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine declared by it within the framework of internationally recognized borders.

"We agreed on a plan for further actions at the bilateral and multilateral levels, including on cooperation with our European friends and partners," the Foreign Ministry said.

As reported, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Serbia condemned critical remarks of Aleksandrovych concerning Russian-Serbian relations and his statement about the participation of Serbian mercenaries in the conflict in the east of Ukraine.

In turn, People's Deputy of Ukraine Irina Friz (Petro Poroshenko Bloc) regarded the accusations of the Serbian side against the Ukrainian ambassador for his statements about the participation of Serbian mercenaries in the war against Ukraine and criticism of Serbian-Russian relations as attempts to divert attention from the pro-Russia position of Serbia.

Klimkin summoned Alexandrovych for consultations about Serbian mercenaries in Donbas.
