Sajdik condemns shooting attack on Donetsk filtering station, calls for creation of technical security zones around Donbas civil infrastructure

Special representative of the OSCE in the Trilateral Contact Group on Ukraine Martin Sajdik has condemned the shelling attack of the Donetsk filtering station and called on the parties to the conflict to create technical security zones around the civil infrastructure in Donbas.

In a statement released on Saturday, Sajdik said: "Together with Ambassador Ertugrul Apakan, Ambassador Tony Frisch and Per Fischer, TCG subgroup coordinators on security, humanitarian and economic issues, I firmly reiterate our condemnation of all violations with regard to the ceasefire in eastern Ukraine, a departure from the recent agreements of the parties to the conflict on the ceasefire, which constitute a constant direct threat to the local population."

"We strongly condemn the bombardment of the Donetsk filtering station that took place on the night of November 4. We emphasize that damage to only one of the nine hundred-kilogram tanks of highly toxic chlorine gas for cleaning water stored at the facility can lead to the death of people within a radius of 200 meters, including station personnel, and seriously disrupt the supply of water for almost 350,000 people on both sides of the line of contact," the statement said.

The OSCE representatives called on the parties to the conflict "to completely stop putting the civil infrastructure at risk." "We urge them to give appropriate orders to troops and armed formations on the ground, to promulgate these orders - in anticipation of creating security zones around civilian infrastructure facilities - to come to an agreement without delay in the current discussions of the TCG on the creation of such security zones," Sajdik said.
