Ukraine submits new documents to ECHR on lawsuit against Russia for its actions in Donbas

Ukraine, as part of a lawsuit against Russia, has submitted a package of new documents to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) regarding events in Donbas in 2014, Ukrainian Justice Minister Pavlo Petrenko has said.

"I announce this for the first time, but a few days ago, as part of the second case (concerning the kidnapping of orphans in Donbas and bringing them to Russia), we submitted a large legal position (that is, this was the country's obligation as an applicant) with testimony from over a hundred witnesses. Thus we closed the legal part on our statement in connection with the events in Donbas in 2014. Russia has practically no weighty arguments and facts to refute this information," he said on the NewsOne television channel.

Petrenko recalled that in the first case "Ukraine vs. Russia" regarding annexation of Crimea, the Ukrainian side had filed and the ECHR had accepted a legal position with the testimony of 50 witnesses and a large number of documents and video materials.

"Now we are expecting from the court a procedural schedule, when the hearings will be held, when witnesses will be questioned, and when a decision will be made," he said.

In addition, he said that all companies that receive interest from the construction of the Kerch Bridge would be subject to international sanctions.

"All the facts and circumstances on the Kerch Bridge will be used not only in cases that concern the European Court of Human Rights, but also in other cases, for example, at the UN International Court [of Justice]. In addition, this is a powerful argument for sanctions. All companies that receive at least a kopeck from the construction of this bridge are potential clients for international sanctions," Petrenko said.

As reported, as of June 1, 2017, Ukraine filed five lawsuits against Russia at the ECHR concerning the events in Crimea and eastern Ukraine and prepared for submission the documents on the sixth lawsuit.
