Anti-corruption authorities probe abuse of power by NBU officials

Chairman of Ukraine's Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office Nazar Kholodnytsky has declined to say whether the anti-corruption authorities are investigating a criminal case involving Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) Valeriya Gontareva.

He told the 1+1 television channel late on Thursday, September 21, that there were criminal proceedings on abuse of power by NBU officials.

"We have several proceedings on unlawful actions and possible abuse and excess of power and office by officials of the National Bank," Kholodnytsky said.

As reported, Gontareva sent in her resignation request to Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on April 6, 2017.

She was on paid vacation starting from May 11, 2017 until August 7, 2017. First Deputy NBU Governor Yakiv Smolii was acting head of the central bank.

In August 2017, NBU's press service reported that Gontareva would be still absent on leave from September 8 through September 26, 2017.

The press service said that the NBU governor did not plan to return to work to the central bank.
