President sees defensive arms as tool of legal protection of Ukrainian position

Providing Ukraine with defensive weapons is not just a weapon, but a legal instrument to protect the Ukrainian position, President Petro Poroshenko has said.

"Another importance of defensive weapons is not just Javelin anti-tank missiles. We produce the Stugna [anti-tank missile system], which has a different principle, but still very efficient. We are talking about a radio-electronic warfare system that presents irrefutable evidence of Russia's crimes to the world – from where they open fire to kill our civilians, where and when, what is the caliber of the heavy weaponry they brought contrary to the Minsk agreements. After all, this evidence will help us form a legal position when the crimes of Russia will be considered in an international court The Hague... This is not just a weapon, but also a legal instrument to protect the Ukrainian position," the presidential press service quoted him as saying at a meeting with the Ukrainian community and representatives of Crimean Tatar organizations in New York on Monday, September 18.

Poroshenko also noted that Ukraine had achieved significant progress in talks with the new U.S. administration on the provision of defensive weapons.

According to him, not only Ukraine is waiting for the provision of defensive weapons.

"This is not just a position that helps increase the price the Russian aggressor will pay for assuming the offensive. It also opens an opportunity for the United Kingdom, Canada and other countries to provide the same assistance for us. They are waiting for the political decision by the United States," Poroshenko said.
