Kyiv urges intl community to increase pressure on Russia in connection with Zeytullaev case ruling

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has called upon the international community to condemn the actions of Russian courts in connection with the ruling of the Russian Supreme Court to increase the term of imprisonment by three years for the citizen of Ukraine, Ruslan Zeytullaev.

"The Foreign Ministry of Ukraine expresses its strong protest in connection with the ruling of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation dated July 27, 2017 to prolong the period of imprisonment of Ukrainian citizen Ruslan Zeytullaev illegally convicted on trumped up charges of organizing a terrorist organization and carrying out terrorist activities on the territory of the temporarily occupied Crimea," the ministry in a statement issued on Thursday.

The Foreign Ministry said Zeytullaev's trial "is a glaring example of the use by the occupation authorities of repressions against the Crimean Tatar people and violation of fundamental human rights and freedoms."

The Foreign Ministry of Ukraine demands Russia immediately stop the prosecution of Ukrainian civilians, as well as comply with the ruling of the International Court of Justice to stop illegal actions against representatives of the Crimean Tatar people.

"We call on the international community to condemn the anti-human and illegal activities of the judicial agencies of the Russian Federation and to increase political and diplomatic pressure on the aggressor state with the goal of freeing all Ukrainian citizens who are illegally detained in Russia and on the territory of the temporarily occupied Autonomous Republic of Crimea," the statement says.
