Poroshenko promises to help Chisinau restore Moldova's sovereignty over Transdniestria

Ukraine stands ready to help Moldova restore its territorial integrity and sovereignty, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said.

"We, Ukraine, are ready to facilitate the restoration of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Republic of Moldova as much as we can and do whatever we can to restore what was provoked 25 years ago and has grave consequences for hundreds of thousands of people living today in Transdniestria," Poroshenko said at a joint press briefing with Moldovan Prime Minister Pavel Filip in Odesa region, opening the joint Ukrainian-Moldovan border checkpoint Kuchurgan-Pervomaisk.

Filip described allegations of a blockade of Transdniestria by Ukraine and Moldova as mere speculations.

"It's strange to hear various speculations regarding the so-called blockade of Transdniestria by the Moldovan and Ukrainian authorities. We should see that exports of products to Ukraine from this territory, for example, in 2015-2016 amounted to nearly $10 million, and 60% of general exports from this region were to EU countries," Filip said.

Transdniestrian leadership might be discontented with such an amount of exports to EU countries, he said.
