Turchynov discusses cooperation on cyber threats with Mingarelli

Secretary of Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) Oleksandr Turchynov has discussed with EU Delegation to Ukraine chief Hugues Mingarelli the latest cyber attack against Ukraine's information resources and issues of cooperation between Ukraine and the EU to counteract cyber threats, the NSDC's website said on Wednesday.

"Cooperation on this issue is extraordinarily topical, because cyber war is one of the most dangerous aspects of Russia's aggression against our state," Turchynov was quoted as saying. He added that the latest attack was powerful and directed against information resources used by government agencies, the banking sector, critical infrastructure and economic entities working in Ukraine.

Mingarelli, in turn, confirmed willingness to cooperate in the sphere of cyber security.

"We support reforms undertaken in Ukraine and are ready to actively cooperate with you to counteract cyber threats, which pose a danger for our countries," Mingarelli said.

The sides also discussed reforming Ukraine's security and defense sectors.

As earlier reported, on June 27 the computer network of Ukraine's Cabinet of ministers, along with dozens of state and private banks and companies, were victims of a massive computer virus attack that shut down operations. Experts preliminarily have called the event the largest cyber attack in Ukraine's history.
