Ukraine should become next NATO member after Montenegro – Parubiy

Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Andriy Parubiy believes that Ukraine should become the next NATO member after Montenegro.

I believe that Ukraine should be one of the following states after Montenegro, which should become a member of the North Atlantic alliance," Parubiy told journalists on Monday.

Answering the clarifying question about the exact date when Ukraine can become a member of NATO, Parubiy said that he is not a supporter of accurate forecasting of the date, because now everything is happening fast in the world.

"When someone talks about the perspective of five-seven years, we see that in recent years, events in the world are happening so quickly that it can happen at any stage ... I'm not in favor of determining exact dates, I'm inclined to demonstrate political will, and events develop in such a way that the decision of the Alliance and Ukraine regarding its participation in NATO can be solved unexpectedly quickly," the speaker of the Ukrainian parliament said.

He said that Ukraine needs to integrate into NATO as soon as possible. He believes that Ukraine should do everything possible to bring the security sector of Ukraine to NATO standards until 2020, and "after that there will be only a political decision."

According to Parubiy, "there is no need for interim forms, such as the NATO Membership Action Plan (MAP).
