Trump intends to meet with Putin on sidelines of G20 summit in Germany

U.S. President Donald Trump plans to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Hamburg, the U.S. Administration announced on Thursday.

U.S. National Security Advisor Herbert McMaster told journalists that, while in Hamburg, Trump would meet with a number of foreign leaders, including Putin.

The work on the agenda of the future meeting between Trump and Putin has not yet been completed, McMaster said. He declined to answer whether the two leaders would discuss Russia's alleged interference in the U.S. election.

Trump plans to bring up 'irritants' in U.S.-Russian bilateral relations and possible areas where the two countries could work together, McMaster said.

The G20 summit in Hamburg will take place on July 7-8.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had said earlier in the day that Moscow presumed that a meeting between the Russian and U.S. leaders would take place in Hamburg. "We presume that a contact will take place, since the two presidents will be simultaneously in the same city, in the same building, and in the same room. Perhaps it would be wrong if they could not talk with one another; moreover, it would be wrong it they could not talk on numerous issues," Lavrov said at a joint press conference with German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel in Krasnodar.

Asked about the meeting's agenda, Lavrov said, "First of all, we should seek normalization of dialogue" between Moscow and Washington.
