Variant of earlier emerged virus used for cyber-attack in Ukraine - SBU

Computer networks have been hit using a variant of earlier emerged ransomware. Its updated version is being studied now, the press service of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has reported.

"At present SBU specialists jointly with the State Service of Special Communications and Information Protection, the cyber police department, representatives of anti-virus labs are studying the samples of this piece of ransomware and working on its neutralization. Soon recommendations how to protect yourself from the above-mentioned cyber-attack will be given," the SBU said on its website.

According to the preliminary assessment, the attack was planned in advance and organized in several stages.

The SBU said that the major cyber-attack aimed at pivotal information infrastructure of energy generating and energy supply companies, transportation, some banks and telecom companies. Many private companies have been also affected by the virus.

The cyber police of Ukraine said in Twitter that jointly with the Talos team from Cisco, the Department of Counterintelligence Protection of State Interests in Information Security Area of the SBU and the State Service of Special Communications and Information Protection have formed a working group to tackle the situation with the cyber-attack.

The recommendations will be posted at once at all available resources, the cyber police said.
