Ukrainian court to continue trying Yanukovych case on June 29

The Kyiv Obolonsky District Court has rescheduled the trial of the high treason case involving Ukraine's ex-president Viktor Yanukovych for 10:00 a.m. on June 29.

The decision was announced by Court Chairman Vladislav Devyatko at a hearing on Monday morning.

The court agreed with the arguments presented by the defense lawyer for Yanukovych that, in accordance with the legislation, the accused has to fail to show up in court again for a decision to be made to hold a special hearing of the high treason case involving the ex-president (in absentia).

The first hearing of the high treason case against Yanukovych, for which Yanukovych failed to show up, was held in the Obolonsky District Court on Monday, June 26.

According to earlier reports, Yanukovych is charged with encroachment on the territorial integrity and inviolability of Ukraine, which led to the death of people or other grave consequences (the crime is punishable by seven to 12 years in prison), high treason (the crime is punishable by ten to 15 years in prison), and waging an aggressive war or aggressive military actions (the crime is punishable by ten to 15 years in prison).

According to the agenda posted on the website of the Obolonsky District Court, Yanukovych has been summoned to ten hearings scheduled for June 26, June 29, July 6, July 12, July 13, August 3, August 10, August 17, August 23, and August 31, 2017.
