Poroshenko expresses condolences on former German Chancellor Kohl's death

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has expressed his condolences on the death of former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl.

"[I'm expressing] sincere condolences to the German people over the irreparable loss of the man who meant the whole epoch, Helmut Kohl, the leader who has made an invaluable contribution to strengthening European unity and healing the scars of the Cold War," Poroshenko wrote on Facebook on Friday evening.

As reported on Friday, June 16, the German newspaper Bild, former German Chancellor Kohl died at the age of 87 at his home in the city of Ludwigshafen, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. Kohl was chancellor from 1982 to 1998. He also chaired the Christian Democratic Union of Germany for many years. As Germany united during his leadership, Kohl was dubbed the "chancellor of unity" and the driving force behind European integration. The causes behind the death were not reported.
