Poroshenko considers Ukraine's application for NATO membership premature

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko has said that he will sign a law on the restoration of Ukraine's course for NATO membership, since this initiative had been agreed with him.

"Of course, I will sign, because this legislative initiative had been agreed with me. The coalition took an active part in passing this law," Poroshenko told journalists in Kharkiv on Friday.

The goal of entry into NATO is not new for Ukraine, which is simply going back to its original objectives, Poroshenko said.

"Being the president of this country, I am supposed to look after national security but when will this [entry into NATO] happen? We have a great deal of work to do, as the criteria of aspiration for NATO membership are extremely high," Poroshenko said.

At the same time he emphasizes the priority of carrying out reforms in order to bring the state in line with the criteria of NATO before applying for membership in this organization.

"Let's talk today not about the formal side of filing the application, but about what Ukraine needs to do in order to reform our state so that it meets the criteria that are necessary for membership," Poroshenko said.

Ukraine should start with reforms, which will bring it in compliance with the NATO criteria, before applying for membership in the alliance, Poroshenko said.

"Let us not speak about the formal filing of this application but discuss what Ukraine should do to reform our country so that it meets the membership criteria," Poroshenko said.

The former plan of action for entry into NATO, which Ukraine had in place (in 2008-2010), fully coincided with the measures envisaged by the Agreement of Association with the European Union and the criteria of NATO membership, he said.
