Ukrainian detectives see Russia's involvement in Voronenkov's murder as primary theory

Ukrainian law enforcement officers view the theory of Russia's involvement in former Russian State Duma deputy Denis Voronenkov's killing in central Kyiv as a primary theory.

"Bearing in mind who the victim was, we see the Russian Federation's actions aimed at eliminating this person as someone who gave important testimony in proceedings taking place in Ukraine among the primary theories," Oleksandr Vakulenko, Ukrainian National Police deputy chief and head of the Main Investigative Directorate, told reporters at the crime scene.

Andriy Kryschenko, chief of the Ukrainian National Police department for Kyiv, said for his part with reference to the assassin and Voronenkov's bodyguard, who were both wounded in the shootout, that doctors have yet to determine how serious their injuries were and whether their lives were in danger.

"We can only say that they are reliably protected: both the security guard and the hypothetical assassin," Kryschenko said.
