Poroshenko, ICRC president condemn situation aggravation in Avdiyivka, discuss steps to prevent repeated incidents

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko during his meeting with the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Peter Maurer, have discussed the deepening of cooperation with the ICRC with a view of implementing the humanitarian aspects of the Minsk agreements and condemned the escalation of the security situation in Avdiyivka.

"The parties condemned new escalation near Avdiyivka, which, inter alia, caused another suspension in the functioning of the Donetsk filtration plant and posed a threat to the water supply of the whole region. The parties discussed possible efforts to prevent such incidents in the future," the press service of the Ukrainian president said following the meeting of Poroshenko and Maurer in Kyiv on Monday.

Poroshenko expressed gratitude for the large-scale program of assistance provided by the ICRC for Ukraine to overcome consequences of the ongoing Russian aggression.

The president noted great interest of Ukraine in further enhancement of interaction with the ICRC, particularly with a view to implement humanitarian aspects of the Minsk agreements.

"As stated by the president, the involvement of the ICRC has a great importance for the facilitation in the liberation of hostages, search for missing persons, provision of humanitarian aid to citizens who stay in the occupied territories, etc.," a message says.
