If imposed by UN intl court, temporary measures will help protect civilian population, avoid escalation of Ukraine conflict

Preventive measures sought by Ukraine from the Russian Federation within the framework of the review of the case in the UN's International Court of Justice (ICJ) for holding Russia to account for committing acts of terrorism and discrimination will help defend Ukraine's population and avoid further escalation of the situation, Ukrainian diplomats have said.

"Preventive measures will allow the court to avoid the deterioration of the situation and, most importantly, to defend the civilian population during hearings of the case… Their application is especially important in the context of the worsening situation in Avdiyivka and Crimea. In its application for the use of preventive measures Ukraine asks the court to oblige Russia to cease violating international law," says a release posted to Ukraine's Foreign Ministry website on Monday.

Ukraine has applied to the ICJ with an appeal to compel Russia to ensure effective control over its border [with Ukraine], to cease the supply of Russian weapons to Ukraine, cease assistance to illegal armed formations, which inflict harm on Ukrainian people, as well as desist from any further acts of ethnic discrimination in illegally occupied [by Russia] Crimea.

The ICJ is hearing arguments about introducing temporary measures to restore order. "It is expected the court will render a decision within the next several weeks," the statement said.

As earlier reported, on January 16, 2017, Ukraine applied to the UN's ICJ to hold Russia to account for committing terrorist acts on its territory, as well as for discrimination against Ukrainian citizens during the course of its unlawful campaign of aggression against Ukraine.

ICJ hearings, which are taking place in the Hague (the Netherlands), are scheduled for March 6 to March 9.
