Russia repeatedly tried to destabilize internal situation in Ukraine – Poroshenko

The Russian Federation is attempting to destabilize the situation in Ukraine with the help of a 'fifth column', Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has said.

"The enemy has noticed positive changes in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Otherwise, it would not have doubled and tripled its attempts to destabilize the situation internally," the president said in Kyiv on Wednesday in a meeting with soldiers.

Poroshenko said Ukraine's SBU Security Service had uncovered a group of individuals, who were preparing various provocations aimed at destabilizing the situation in Ukraine on orders directly from Russia.

"Some people in Moscow and in Kyiv attempted to arrange as many provocations as possible during the third anniversary marking the deaths of protesters, the so-called Heavenly Hundred [who were shot dead in Kyiv on February 20, 2014 near Independence Square in Kyiv]. They sought and are still looking for a drop of blood, which could lead to a mass protest. By the way, Russia's Zvezda TV channel called loudest for a "Third Maidan" [revolution] with other Russian [media] outlets," the president said.

The president thanked citizens for taking part in commemoration events to honor those killed, praising them for not being provoked, as well as law-enforcement officers, who kept the peace during the events.
