UN supports Normandy Four talks, Minsk format

The UN Security Council, chaired by Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin, was holding open debates on the issue of conflicts in Europe.

"However, peace and prosperity in Europe must not be taken for granted, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said. The need for multilateral institutions and solid regional organizations to maintain peace and stability is necessary in the face of new challenges and threats, including populism, nationalism, xenophobia and violent extremism, he said in the framework of the UNSC Ministerial open debate on "Maintenance of International Peace and Security: Conflicts in Europe" on Tuesday.

He also noted that the number of conflicts in Europe, including in the Donets Basin, may have a geopolitical processes that could undermine international peace and security.

He said the UN fully supports the negotiation process in Normandy format and the Minsk format, as well as a special monitoring mission of the OSCE. Guterres said about the need of an immediate ceasefire and the withdrawal of heavy weapons.

As reported, Ukraine has started to chair the Security Council of the United Nations since February 1. It is planned that the settlement of conflicts in Europe will be considered under the presidency of Ukraine on February 21.
