Russia's envoy to UN Vitaly Churkin dies

Russia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin has suddenly died in New York on February 20, a day before his 65th birthday, the Russian Foreign Ministry said with profound sorrow.

"An outstanding Russian diplomat has passed away during his work. We express our deep condolences to the family and loved ones of Vitaly Ivanovich Churkin," the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

Churkin was born in 1952. He graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations in 1974. He held the degree of a Candidate of Historical Sciences. He was fluent in English and French. Churkin worked in the foreign service since 1974.

He served as the USSR Foreign Ministry's information department head from 1990 to 1992. In the period from 1992 to 1994 he was Russian deputy foreign Minister. Churkin held the post of the Russian ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to Belgium in 1994-1998 and the Russian ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to Canada in 1998-2003. He served as the Russian ambassador-at-large in the period from 2003 to 2006.

He had been the Russian envoy to the UN and Russia's representative in the UN Security Council since April 8, 2006.
